4 DIY Mother's Day Gifts You Can Totally Make

So with spring just around the corner, it’s a good time to share handmade gifts for Mother’s Day. I have made each of these items with the help of online tutorials. The bottom line: If I can make them, anyone can!

Hand-Stamped Initial Pendant Necklace

I love the simplicity of initial necklaces. For this 14K gold-plated initial pendant necklace, I followed a tutorial from ImpressArt, which manufactures hand stamping tools.

Decoupage Seashell

Idea for handmade gifts for Mother's Day: features two different decoupage sea shells as trinket or jewelry dishes.

I live in a coastal state and visit the beach often. I think shells are so beautiful and find myself collecting them. Large oyster and quahog shells make great jewelry and trinket dishes. I learned how to decoupage the shells from a Hallmark Channel segment. I used cocktail napkins for the print, decoupage glue and metallic paint (aka gilding paint) for the borders.

Macrame Wall Hanging

There’s a built-in nook in my home that was meant for a large television (before lighter flatscreens existed). Unfortunately, the nook isn’t tall enough to accommodate a standard-sized door. Having custom doors made can get pricey, so I brainstormed alternatives. Interviewing a macrame artist inspired me to create this curtain. I discovered a tutorial on doubling a macrame pattern by Wendy at My French Twist and ended up knotting the curtain above. For DIY Mother’s Day gifts, I’d suggest using Wendy’s original design.

If you compare my curtain to the original design, you’ll notice differences. That’s because I incorporated knots I picked up from Macrame: The Craft of Creative Knotting for Your Home by Fanny Zedenius to add something of my own. I also used 5/32-inch diameter cotton rope from Rope & Cord, which is a different size than the one in My French Twist’s tutorial.

Set of Handmade Mini Notebooks

I love all things paper, and a few months ago, bookbinding captured my interest. I landed on making 4.25-inch by 5.5-inch notebooks. They’re small enough to toss in a bag and make wonderful travel journals. I learned how to make a softcover notebook by watching a tutorial from Vintage Page Designs.

Instead of purchasing all the tools noted in the tutorial, I opted for We R Memory Keepers Journal Book Binding Punch Guide Set (available at Michaels), which came with all the supplies needed except for the paper.

The cover papers I chose from Paper Source are beautiful but a bit thin to use as covers. Next time, I’d go with thicker paper, such as dried flower petal paper. The inside sheets are plain white printer paper.
