How did you get started creating your creative product?

I was an art educator for 11 years before deciding to leave the classroom to start my own business. I have always loved patterns, so I decided to focus on creating patterns and designs for stationery, fabric, and home goods. Although I enjoy licensing my work, I also like to make my own products. I decided to design and create positive affirmation decks to combine my love of illustration and spreading positivity to others. I now have four different positive affirmation decks that I sell on my website and on Etsy.

When did you realize that you could turn your artwork or creative product into a business?

I studied fine arts and never really understood that you could have your own business selling your work. That is, until I met my husband, who is a graphic designer. He showed me what the freelance world is like and coached me on how to sell my work.

How do you define success for your business?

I am working on shifting my views of success from feeling like I need to be productive all of the time to viewing success as being able to live the lifestyle that I want.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

I find inspiration in nature and through travel. I am often inspired by the coast, as I grew up near the ocean. I also love to travel and find so many inspiring things when visiting new places.

What's one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you first started your business?

The advice I wish I had when starting my business is that it isn't a race, and everything doesn't need to be perfect. Minor setbacks are part of the journey and aren't a sign of failure but of growing.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start selling their art or creative product?

My advice is to just do it! We often make excuses for why we shouldn't or aren't ready. The truth is that you just have to start and learn as you go.

What's something our audience would be surprised to learn about you?

My audience might be surprised to learn that I am a huge movie fan and almost considered being a film director.

As a creative business owner, how do you handle perfectionism?

Perfectionism has definitely been a challenge for me, but I have come a long way. I see now that I learn best by doing, so I learn more by putting my work out there rather than holding on to it until I think it's perfect. Once you put imperfect work out there and see that the world doesn't end, it gets much easier.

What's something that surprised you about running a creative business?

I am most surprised about how much I actually enjoy the business side of having a creative business. I love collecting data and learning new business skills.

What’s your advice for handling the highs and lows of running a business?

My advice on managing the highs and lows of running a business is to show gratitude and appreciation while you’re in your highs. Do not linger in your lows; move on to the next step in front of you. Know that lows are part of the journey and do not define you or your business.

Has someone ever criticized your work? How did you handle it?

I am sure people have thought negative things about my work. I just remind myself that I am not for everyone, and my work isn't for everyone. You can't make everyone happy, and their criticism is a reflection of their opinion, not necessarily fact.

What's a cause you are passionate about?

I am passionate about supporting women's mental health. SeekHer Foundation is an organization that I really like.

Can you share the name of a supplier or vendor that you use for your business that you just love—one that makes running your business a bit easier?

I love working with Stationery HQ; they print all of my affirmation cards and greeting cards. They are a pleasure to work with and easy to use.

What brings you joy?

Cuddling my husky dog, Kenobi, brings me joy.
