How did you get started with your creative work?

I got started during COVID when an opportunity arose to teach virtual paint classes. I earned my Therapeutic Art Life Coach certification and began sharing my passion for art in a way that helped others. Later, I participated in a program that awarded me a grant, which gave me the push to keep growing. From there, my business has continued to evolve, and I haven't looked back since!

At what point did you realize that you could turn your artwork or creative product into a business?

I've always been a creative person, and for as long as I can remember, people would say, "You should do this for a living!" But the real turning point came when I worked as an event manager in the party business. I saw firsthand how to run events for both kids and adults, from birthday parties to crafting experiences. Whether I was creating for fun or for others, I kept hearing the same thing: "You should do this for a living." Eventually, I realized they were right, and I took the leap to turn my passion into a business.

How do you define success for your creative business?

I define success by the freedom to wake up every morning and support myself and my family through my art. It's about looking in the mirror and being proud of who I am, with no regrets about how I spend my time. I'm never watching the clock, wishing I were somewhere else or someone else. True success is knowing that my work inspires others—that the people who take my workshops leave feeling excited to create and continue their own artistic journey. If I can leave people a little better than when I found them, then I know I'm doing something right.

Where do you find inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere—in conversations with my kids, other women, everyday moments, other artists, music and film. Life itself is art, and simply being alive is worth celebrating through creativity. When you see the world through an artistic lens, even the smallest moments can spark something magical.

What's one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you first started your business?

Just start with one thing. It's easy to get overwhelmed when you're multi-talented, but focusing on mastering one thing first will set a strong foundation. Once you've built momentum and confidence, you can start adding more to your plate. Trying to do everything at once can slow you down—focus, perfect, then expand.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start selling their art or creative product?

Take the time to know yourself and embrace who you are. Your art is an extension of you; it's your voice on canvas. If you're unsure of yourself, it can be challenging to build an art business without confidence. Your value as an artist comes from your experiences, your perspective, and your unique style. The more in tune you are with yourself, the more authentic and powerful your work will be, and that's what truly resonates with people.

What's something our audience would be surprised to learn about you?

Something people might be surprised to know is that I'm Puerto Rican and I'm also a writer and poet. I'm always creating, whether it's through art, words, or anything in between!

How do you handle perfectionism as a creative entrepreneur?

Perfectionism? What's that? I'm human; I embrace being perfectly imperfect! I've learned that chasing perfection can hold you back, so instead, I focus on growth. I go into every situation knowing I have a lot to offer, but I'm always open to learning. Art, like life, is about evolution, not perfection.

What's something that surprised you about running a creative business?

What surprised me the most was how many different ways there are to make money from my art! From teaching classes and workshops, to licensing, hosting parties, doing events at bars, selling prints, art kits, and even art products— the possibilities are endless. The creative business world is full of opportunities, and it's amazing how art can take you in so many different directions.

What advice would you give to someone about handling the highs and lows of running a business?

Go into it knowing that the highs and lows are part of the journey. As long as what you're doing aligns with your true purpose and your goals, you'll have the strength to push through the tough times. When you're not aligned with who you are or what serves your purpose, the struggles can become an excuse to give up. But when your work feels authentic, you'll find the resilience to keep going, no matter the obstacles.

Has someone ever criticized your work? How did you handle it?

Isn't that the point? Criticism is part of the territory. Everyone is free to interpret art however they wish, and I respect that. I don't let negative feedback get to me. I focus on the people who resonate with my work. At the end of the day, it's about staying true to myself and my vision, and trusting that the right audience will connect with it. I actually find it funny to hear negative criticism sometimes. I'm always open to hearing someone's perspective, but I also reserve the right to laugh at it. At the end of the day, art is subjective, and not everyone will get it, and that's totally fine! I just focus on staying true to what feels right for me.

What's a cause you are passionate about and why?

Mental health and wellness are causes that are near and dear to my heart. Many people I love are affected by mental health issues, and I truly believe art can be a powerful tool in supporting mental well-being. One organization that offers incredible resources for those struggling with their mental health is National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). They provide a wealth of information and support for individuals and families. To learn more, visit NAMI's website.

Can you share the name of a supplier or vendor that you use for your business that you just love—one that makes running your business a bit easier?

I would not be able to run my business without my Wix website, ChatGPT, Canva, and all social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

What brings you joy?

A perfect day filled with joy for me is all about family, laughing, listening to music, sharing a good meal and painting. And to top it off, nothing beats a cup of coffee. That's when I feel like I'm truly living the dream.
